Homeward Bound - Part Two - Mt. Shasta City

We finished with Mt. Ashland and headed south, crossing the state line soon after that, with the first glimpse from the ground of fabulous Mt. Shasta through a gap right on the line.  I know I've already shown you this mountain ad nauseum, but I cannot get enough of it in it's various sunlights and angles, so prepare to see more. Our rest stop in Shasta City turned out to be one of the funnest things we did on the trip!!

Mt. Shasta's north side, with Shastina leaning off the right side

now Shastina is head on with Shasta behind

now zoom up to see Shastina to the left of Mt. Shasta with its fresh dusting of snow

Black Butte, which we will climb in the future

last one I promise.  Seen from the turn-off to the Museum in Shasta City.  Shastina can easily be picked out in this view.     My friend Cathy would note the annoying contrail that hovered over the peak for a good half hour.

the Mt. Shasta - Sisson Museum

see?  More on this when the museum opens.  Until then, we'll look at the hatchery right there next to the museum.

First of four long waterway tanks; these two are the older "naturalized" runs, the others are cement tanks

Lots of fingerling little fish.  This view is but a tiny fraction of them.

get near the edge, or swing your hand out over the water and they go mad, thinking you're feeding them kibbles, I guess

it was a fascinating read and tour

bigger fish in tank two

getting pretty big, eh?  The biggest ones were in deep shadows, so I couldn't capture them nicely on film

one more of the fish

tank one from the other end.  rhe building is the museum, so you can see how capacious it is.  we only browsed quickly and saw a lot.

Bad photo of a photo in the museum showing the town of Sisson California

a bit of information for my friends, the Sissons

a little more info

how the name changed from Sisson to Mt. Shasta

loved the wedding dress and accessories

look at the details that the seamstress included and imagine doing the stitchery.  wow.

this is for my sister Lucy, since she loves clouds

This is for all book lovers; a portion of the Joaquin Miller display.  He was a prolific writer!

now we're in Red Bluff, looking at Mt. Lassen in it's shiny white coat.  Home is another hour and a half away.  I think the mountain to the right of Lassen might be Brokeoff Mt., where this trip began.

thus, it's time for a milkshake for me, and a root-beer float for Jeffery!
Ta-dah!  I'm home now, long ago, actually.  Soon I'll be showing you Autumn in the Canyon.  Thanks for sharing my fun!

Homeward Bound - Part One - Mt. Ashland

Our last day of vacation.  We were thinking of hiking up the Castle Crags trail, but that was said to be an extreme climb.  We wanted to do the Black Butte climb, but the directions to the trailhead were so convoluted, we decided we didn't have the time this trip.  So, we started down Hwy 5, and let Fate choose our path for us.  It was a good decision!
***Okay, I re-named this Part One because I had so much to show you of and from Mt. Ashland
We drove up 12 miles (we were told it would be 4 miles) to reach the Mt. Ashland Ski Area, past the campground lower down.  Stopped for a view before we headed towards the peak, (2.7 miles on) where the white ball gleams.

The Mt. Ashland Ski Lodge.  Jeffery shows me something

Mt. Shasta in the morning from up high!

the weather station radio receiver doppler effect thing atop Mt. Ashland.  We spoke briefly to two workers, and they loved their job; counted themselves very fortunate.

Jeffery atop Mt. Ashland with Mt. McLoughlin in the far background

me atop Mt. Ashland with Mt. Shasta in the far background

Taking a counter-clockwise turn from my seat at the top in this and the next three photos to show you the view.  This will give you about 180 degrees

the land falls away at first

I love love love all the ripples and layers and blobs, and the deeps
one more, with Shasta to the left, but the sun takes over

Can't help showing you different views of most noble Mt. Shasta,  There will be more later.

turned north away from the sun to show you the view down to the ski lodge, and to point out how many kinds of mountains and "coverings" for mountains there are.

geodetic survey marker

another of Shasta, with all the falling foreground to make your tummy hurt.

looking over either Ashland or Medford to the far mountains.  Is it Mt Hood?  We need to look it up.

Jeffery passes by the top of the ski lift to view the ski run below

This is as close as I could get from this viewpoint.  That's Mt. McLoughlin in the background.

the flat to the right is where you end up after skiing from here somewhere.  Hmmm.  Looks scary to me.

Hi Jeffery

Hi, view of the north-west

Hi back at ya, says Jeffery's hand

back on Hwy 5, can you see Mt. Ashland, there in the middle?
I'll make my final trip post soon as my computer cools down.  Til then!  Thanks for your patience.
