Brokeoff Mountain Hike

Brenda and Laurie Braaten helped plan our excursion up Brokeoff Mountain in Lassen National Park.  The weather was cloudy, cool, and occasionally misty, with windiness at the top levels.  We girls turned back just short of the top, but the guys made it up to the top.  It was a great trip; in ways, better than the climb up Lassen Peak, due to the lovely forest scenery along the way.  It was a 3.5 mile one way hike, but we had to come back down, so I added 7 miles to my log book!  Thanks friends all for this wonderful experience!

ready to get started

Laurie, Jeffery and Brenda at the Trailhead

our trail will take us from 6600 ft. to 9235 ft. elevation

love the meadow colors

climbing through the forest

view of Brokeoff Mountain

if you look at the top, you'll see the trail-line, which we ascended from left to right.  Brenda and I didn't round the bend at the far right, but Jeffery and Laurie would do so.

these looked like they we made of gold

Brenda calls these "gnome rocks" and they are landed lava blobs from previous eruptions

out of the forest and not far from the top

lunch time renews our energies

Laurie at the top

Jeffery at the top

mizzling rain dampens us, but being back down out of the wind helped us stay warm

after the rain, a hiker left his prints behind

the guys waiting for the girls

Laurie called this a turtle on the tree.  strange growth formation

Jeffery and I at the lake where Jeffery and the guys camped this past winter
We wended to the bottom and headed to the Lodge for cocoa and answers to questions about various tree-identities and more.  What a great day.
